What Do I Do With My Arms?!
Lots of people struggle with expressive arm movements when they are new to dance. They feel self-conscious or unsure about which ‘shapes’ they should be making. The secret is to start with small and simple movements to see what your arms are capable of, what is comfortable for you, and how your body responds. Here is a video I published during the COVID-19 lockdown (2020) to help beginner dancers play and explore arm movements. Follow along and have a go at waking up your arms - all the way from your fingertips to your torso! Identify how your dancing and movement confidence improves with a little practice and exploration. Keep in mind that you may need to approach learning to dance/arm movements with help from a medical professional, GP or Physiotherapist if you have medical conditions, movement restrictions or pain.
